Rapunzel...Again

  Here is yet another Rapunzel costume I made, designed by a customer. She looks adorable wearing it, and she sent me this nice appreciation photo. I really love her take on Rapunzel. The darker fabric is really neat and although you can't see by the photo, there is beautiful embroidery and sequin details.

Hidden Super Supplies

   I found a really neat place for supplies that beats any sort of retail and online store! I live in a really rural area with lots of Mennonite and Amish. For y'all city people who don't have them around, Amish and Mennonites make and wear their own clothes. As in Little House On The Prairie style stuff, complete with bonnets, but more modest. Many use horse and buggies and do not have electric. Their kids attend one room school house type schools and only go til 8th grade. They are SUPER nice people and very resourceful. Anyways, around here we have a lot of them.
  I always thought they went to regular fabric stores like Walmart or Joann Fabrics or something. I've seen a few of them in places like that, but not enough to say so, really. My friend had been telling me for quite some time that I was wasting money going to retail stores. I never really believed I was until one day I let her drag me to a Mennonite "general store". You never would've even known the place was there. It looked like they made their store in the basement of an old barn, complete with carpet remnants for the flooring, and teeny tiny aisles.
  I was BLOWN AWAY! They had a WAY bigger selection than I thought they would have and at the cheapest prices I have ever seen! I got lace trim that sells at Joann Fabrics for $4 a yard, for a whopping $0.39 a yard! Premium cotton quilting fabric that usually sells for $12 a yard? Forget it...the Mennonites were selling it for $3.50 a yard. I also snagged some super fancy 3" wide trim that usually retails for around $15 a yard for....wait for it...wait for it....$0.55 a yard!
  They also have all sorts of notions, threads, hard to find zippers etc etc. I got a new pair of Gingher scissors made in Italy that usually sell for $40 a pair for a measly $25.
  Moral of the story? It's worth it to support your local small businesses, and if you look hard enough you may find a hidden treasure that'll save you tons of money. And in the process, you may just learn something about another culture. It's a win win :)
